The Ebb and Flow of Social Networking – the stages
July 3rd, 2007 by philip.wilkinson

An interesting perspective from wisdump.com on the life of a social network community:

Not only is it suggesting that social networks users are very fickle, but like any business, there is a time and a place where it reigns supreme but almost always faces some inevitable decline over some sort of time frame. Every empire crumbles eh! I do like the fact that it shows “initial buzz” which can come out of something new and exciting and that the true test is if it can grow and sustain itself once this buzz has worn off.

The graph is particularly focussed around social networks so can’t be applied to all businesses although I’d be interested to hear from anyone who could stretch the analogy further…

From a social user view point couldn’t it be argued that social networking is still on the climb. Everyday I come across many new sites that range from the MySpace/Facebook style to the news submission sites and that this type of social marketing is only in its infancy. Apart of me thinks that will all the new entrants into social media relm are deluting this avenue of marketing but there will probably be a socail media war similar that was seen with the fast food industry.
